Onsite-Studies & Research

Japanese Cultural Society

Though I was unable to make a trip down to the location of the organisation itself, I would like to provide elaborate research on what this organisation is, and how they expose Japanese culture to locals in Singaporeans.

Offering Unique Japanese Culture & Experience, The Japanese Cultural Society (JCSS) is the only local social organisation which actively promotes Japanese cultural activities.

HISTORY

Founded in 1963, the founding members of the society firmly believed that studying a language opens the door to understanding a country's culture. In March 1966, a language study group began to take shape gradually. As one of its activities, the Society began a "Japanese language course."

WHAT THE ORGANISATION OFFERS

01. Cultural Info

With strong commitments in exposing the Japanese culture to locals in Singapore, the website offers cultural info in the different unique Japanese culture and activities.

02. Language Courses

Ranging from Elementary level to Further Advanced level, the organisation caters to all who wishes to learn Japanese.

03. Examinations and Proficiency

They provide the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students, which primarily aims to assess the Japanese language proficiency and the fundamental academic skills of international students who want to enroll in undergraduate programs at Japanese universities, as well as the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), which is administered in December and focuses primarily on listening/comprehension. Japanese as a second language, Science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), Japan & the World, and Mathematics are the test topics.

04. Events

  • The site provides information on cultural activities like Sousaku (Creative Art) as well as upcoming events with a calendar.

  • The Japanese Culture Festival is a festival where activities like Japanese folk dance, Japanese choir, karaoke, Japanese drums, tea ceremony, Japanese art of paper-folding (origami) & calligraphy lessons will be offered along with other additional events.

It is very beneficial to visit this organisation, especially for someone interested in learning more about Japanese language and culture. People can experience Japan's diverse culture through a wide range of activities without traveling there.
